How To Store Wine At Home

Properly storing wine is critical to its long-term preservation. While we strongly encourage keeping your wine in a storage facility designed for proper wine storage, we nevertheless understand that, for varying reasons, this isn’t always a viable option. We’ve therefore created this guide to storing wine at home.

Prior to beginning, we invite you to explore the different storage guidelines particular to each category of wine:

When storing wine there are a few variables that, if not controlled, can ruin your wine. These include:

  • Light Exposure

  • Temperature

  • Humidity

When storing wine at home it is important to take these into consideration.

Where Not To Store Wine At Home

Many people make the mistake of storing wine in their kitchen where exposure to humidity and light exceed recommendations. This includes near:

  • Dishwashers

  • Sinks

  • Refrigerators

  • Windows

All of these places increase your wine’s exposure to things that can ruin it and should therefore be avoided. For example, humidity levels near dishwashers, sinks, and refrigerators are typically higher. Furthermore, likelihood of U/V exposure is greatly increased near windows.

Where To Store Wine At Home

Ideally, you will want to choose a location that is cool, dry, dark, and unlikely to experience temperature fluctuations. If you are looking for a wine storage room then basements are ideal. If you don’t have a basement or are trying to find where to store wine in an apartment then a cupboard is your next best option.
